Overview

This standard provides requirements for the design, installation, inspection, maintenance, and testing of surge protection measures (SPM) for electrical and electronic systems to reduce the risk of permanent failures due to lightning electromagnetic impulse (LEMP) within a structure. Protection against LEMP is based on the lightning protection zone (LPZ) concept. It also provides guidelines for cooperation between the designer of the electrical and electronic system, and the designer of the protection measures, in an attempt to achieve optimum protection effectiveness. This standard specifies requirements for basic protective measures against damage caused by electromagnetic pulses. These include: - grounding and equipotential bonding; - magnetic shielding and cable routing; - a coordinated SPD system; and - insulating interfaces. This standard does not cover protection against electromagnetic interference due to lightning, which may cause malfunctioning of electronic systems. This standard does not deal with detailed design of the electrical and electronic systems themselves. The standard differs from DIN EN 62305-4 (VDE 0185-305-4):2011-10 and DIN EN 62305-4 Corrigendum 1 (VDE 0185-305-4 Corrigendum 1):2017-02 as follows: a) addition of new informative Annex E and Annex F on the determination of current sharing using modelling and current sharing in PV installations respectively; b) addition of a new informative Annex G on methods of testing of system level behaviour; c) addition of a new informative Annex H on induced voltages in SPD-protected installations. The need for this standard derives from the increasing costs of failures in electrical and electronic systems caused by the electromagnetic impact of a lightning strike. Of particular importance are electronic systems used for data processing and storage, as well as for process control and safety monitoring in manufacturing facilities with high capital value, large dimensions, and high complexity (where downtime is highly undesirable for cost and safety reasons). The standard also applies to facilities that could lead to a failure of public services.
