This part of IEC 62561 specifies the requirements and tests for isolating spark gaps (ISGs) for lightning protection systems. This part of IEC 62561 deals with requirements and tests for lightning protection system components (LPSC), and in particular isolating spark gaps (TFS), which are used in the construction of lightning protection systems (LPS) designed and constructed in accordance with the IEC 62305 series of standards. This standard does not cover applications in which follow currents occur. The testing of components for potentially explosive atmospheres (as defined in IEC 60079-10) is not covered in this document. The standard differs from DIN EN 62561-3 (VDE 0185-561-3):2018-02 as follows: a) adaptation to the current edition of ISO 22479 with regard to treatment in humid sulfurous atmospheres; b) addition of a new normative Annex D for the applicability of previous tests. ISGs can be used to indirectly bond a lightning protection system to other nearby metalwork where a direct bond is not permissible for functional reasons. Typical applications include the connection to - earth-termination systems of power installations, - earth-termination systems of telecommunication systems, - auxiliary earth electrodes of voltage-operated, earth fault circuit breakers, - rail earth electrodes of power and DC railways, - measuring earth electrodes for laboratories, - installations with cathodic protection and stray current systems, - service entry masts for low-voltage overhead cables, - bypassing insulated flanges and insulated couplings of pipelines.
This document replaces DIN EN 62561-3:2018-02; VDE 0185-561-3:2018-02 .
