DIN EN IEC 62694 (VDE 0493-3-10) applies to backpack-type radiation detectors (BRDs) that are used for the detection of illicit trafficking of radioactive material. BRDs are portable instruments that are worn on the back during use. They may also be used as temporary area monitors in a stand-alone mode. BRDs shall be capable of detecting gamma radiation and may include neutron detection and/or the identification of gamma-ray emitting radionuclides. This standard establishes performance and testing requirements associated with radiation measurements and the expected electrical, mechanical, and environmental conditions while in use. The standard differs from DIN EN 62694 (VDE 0493-3-10):2017-03 as follows: a) consistency with the new editions of the IEC standards for detecting illegally transported radioactive material; b) introduction of a uniform functional test for all environmental, electromagnetic, and mechanical stresses and a requirement regarding the coefficient of variation for each display range; c) the radiological requirements have been revised, including a simplification of the acceptance conditions for nuclide detection; d) reference to IEC 62706 for the environmental, electromagnetic, and mechanical test conditions.
