This document defines a standardized digital representation of an asset called an "Asset Administration Shell" (AAS). The Asset Administration Shell gives uniform access to information and services. This document focuses on Asset Administration Shells that represent assets of manufacturing companies, including manufactured products. It defines the related structures, information, and services. This document describes the basic concept and structure of the Asset Administration Shell. The document does not describe the meta model for information (to enable the exchange of standardized information), security-related specifications for Asset Administration Shells, online interfaces for Asset Administration Shells, or the communication language between groups of Asset Administration Shells. It does not contain any specifications regarding the content of Asset Administration Shells for different areas (domains). The document describing the administration shell has been prepared by industrial automation standards committees. Applications of the Asset Administration Shell in other industries are possible, but the user shall verify that the specific requirements of the respective industry are met. The concept of the Asset Administration Shell described in the document - aims to create cross-company interoperability, - is intended for both non-intelligent and intelligent products, - aims to cover the entire life cycle of products, devices, machines, and equipment, - aims to enable integrated value chains, and - is intended to serve as the basis for autonomous systems and artificial intelligence.
