This standard specifies the requirements for the design, materials, construction, installation and testing of permanently installed fuel systems as installed for internal combustion engines. It applies to all parts of permanently installed diesel and petrol fuel systems as installed, from the fuel fill opening to the point of connection with the propulsion or auxiliary engine(s) on inboard- and outboard-powered small craft of up to 24 m hull length. Requirements for the design, materials, construction and testing of permanently installed fixed fuel tanks are given in ISO 21487. This standard has been prepared under a mandate given to CEN by the European Commission and the European Free Trade Association to provide a means of conforming to Essential Requirements of the New Approach Directive 94/25/EC as amended by Directive 2003/44/EC. The standard applies for small craft of hull length up to 24 m and specifies the Essential Requirements of the aforementioned Recreational Craft Directive in Annex 1, 5.1.1 "Inboard engine", 5.2.1 "Fuel system, General", 5.2.2 "Fuel tanks", 5.6.1 "Fire protection, General" as well as 5.8 "Discharge prevention". It provides manufacturers and purchasers of craft with legal security by the highest presumption of conformity with regard to the relevant part of the legal requirements. This edition contains the following technical modifications to the previous document: a) the requirement that diesel fuel tanks shall be equipped with inspection hatches for cleaning and inspection has been added; b) specified static pressure tests may be carried out as an alternative to the so far required static impulse test; c) the requirement that non-metallic tanks not integrated and installed in the engine compartment shall be submitted to fire resistance testing has been added; d) the requirement that a metallic tank shall be marked with the maximum temperature this tank may be exposed to has been added. The committee responsible for this standard is NA 132-08-01-05 AK "ISO/TC 188/WG 5 Motoren und Antriebssyteme" ("ISO/TC 188/WG 5 Engines and propulsion systems") at DIN.
