Overview

This standard contains safety requirements. This standard defines relevant requirements set out in Annex I of EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, relating to machines which were placed on the European Economic Area (EEA) market for the first time, with the intent of simplifying the means of proving conformity with these requirements. This document provides safety requirements specific to stand-alone platen presses. This document provides additional safety requirements for the design and construction of manually-fed stand-alone platen presses, for single stroke mode, dwell mode, and continuous operation mode for cutting and creasing, embossing, foil stamping and/or printing of paper, board and other materials processed in a similar manner. This document does not apply to presses designed to handle metal material other than foil. This standard differs from DIN EN 1010-5:2005-10 as follows: a) the document now only covers requirements for manually-fed stand-alone platen presses; all other requirements for paper converting machinery has been revised and moved to DIN EN ISO 12643-4:2023; b) in Clause 3 definitions for different operation modes (single stroke mode, dwell mode, continuous operation mode) have been added; c) in 4.1 requirements have been specified for platen presses of different sizes; d) in 4.2 figures showing examples for safeguarding side access have been included, and the requirements for interlocking tables and for pressure-sensitive mats and laser scanners have been revised; e) in 4.3 the requirements for safeguarding access from the front side have been revised; f) in 4.4. requirements for the positioning of laser scanners have been included; g) in 4.5 requirements when using vision based protective devices (VBPD) for the detection of persons on the platen, including calculation of the safety distance have been included; h) in 4.6 the requirements for timer controlled operation (dwell mode) have been revised; i) in 4.7 the requirements for stopping distance and performance have been revised; j) in Clause 6 requirements for the content of the instruction handbook have been added; k) the list of significant hazards has been moved to an informative Annex A. This document (EN ISO 12643-5:2023) has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 130 "Graphic Technology" in collaboration with Technical Committee CEN/TC 198 "Printing and paper machinery - Safety", the secretariat of which is held by DIN. The national interests during preparation were represented by Working Committee NA 060-23-01 AA "Druck- und Papierverarbeitungsmaschinen" ("Printing and paper converting machines") of Section "Printing and paper machinery" at DIN Standards Committee Mechanical Engineering (NAM). Representatives of manufacturers of printing machines, and of the employers' liability insurance association Energie Textil Elektro Medienerzeugnisse (BG ETEM) contributed to this standard.
