The DIN EN ISO 12944-5 describes coating systems for the corrosion protection of steel structures and supports planners, corrosion protection specialists, coating contractors and operators in selecting suitable systems for different environmental conditions. The standard is part of the DIN EN ISO 12944 series and provides specific recommendations for coating materials, coating build-ups and the durability of corrosion protection systems.
The standard defines coating systems for steel structures in different corrosivity and immersion categories. It focuses on selecting suitable primers, intermediate coats and topcoats, requirements for dry film thicknesses, durability, and the assignment of coating systems to different environmental conditions in accordance with DIN EN ISO 12944-2. In addition, the standard describes system build-ups for unalloyed steel, hot-dip galvanized steel and thermally sprayed metallic coatings.
The standard also provides specific recommendations on binder systems such as epoxy resin (EP), polyurethane (PUR), acrylic resin (AY), ethyl silicate (ESI), polyaspartate (PAS) and polysiloxane (PS).
Selecting the right coating system has a decisive impact on the durability, maintenance intervals and life-cycle costs of steel structures. DIN EN ISO 12944-5 helps companies select corrosion protection systems that are appropriate for the environmental exposure and meet durability and cost-effectiveness requirements.
The requirements relating to corrosivity categories, durability and nominal dry film thicknesses are particularly relevant, as they provide the basis for planning and implementing corrosion protection measures with long-term effectiveness. The standard is typically used in conjunction with DIN EN ISO 12944-2, DIN EN ISO 12944-4 and DIN EN ISO 12944-6.
The 2020 edition was slightly revised compared with the previous edition. The most important changes include:
The DIN EN ISO 12944-5 provides the central basis for selecting suitable coating systems for the corrosion protection of steel structures. With its recommendations on coating materials, durability and coating build-ups, it supports the professional planning and application of long-lasting corrosion protection systems under different environmental conditions.
