Overview

This standard describes methods of Grade 2 accuracy for determination of the noise emission of hand-held combustion-engine powered forest and garden machines, such as chain-saws, brush-cutters, grass-trimmers, pole-mounted powered pruners, hedge-trimmers and garden blowers/vacuums. The noise emission characteristics to be determined are the A-weighted emission sound pressure level at the operator position and the A-weighted sound power level. For the principle determination, the basic standards DIN EN ISO 3744 and DIN EN ISO 11201 are referred to, however, this standard defines more precisely, amongst others, the measurement surface to be used, microphone positions, the surface, the installation and operating conditions as well as the measurements to be carried out for the respective types of machinery. The standard contains tables for the measured values to be recorded and for calculation of the noise emission characteristics. Furthermore, specifications for the determination of equivalent sound levels for one work cycle as well as an example for a water brake for simulation of the load while cutting are included. Additionally, results of round robin tests regarding sound power levels of chain-saws, brush-saws and grass-trimmers are given in an informative annex. With regard to the standard from 2009, new annexes with particular specifications for further types of machines (pole-mounted powered pruners, hedge-trimmers, garden blowers/vacuums) have been incorporated, the permissible surfaces for the test site have been limited, specifications for the measurement surface have been explained in more detail, the clause for declaration and verification of noise emission values has been revised and the standard has been editorially re-structured, amongst others (information for the information to be recorded and reported has been summarized from the different annexes and integrated in the main body, amongst others). The International Standard which forms the basis of the national standard has been prepared by ISO/TC 23/SC 17 "Manually portable forest machinery" under German chairmanship. On the European level, the project falls into the work field of CEN/TC 144 "Tractors and machinery for agriculture and forestry". The responsible national Working Committee is NA 001-01-04 AA "Geräuschemission von Maschinen und Anlagen; Messung, Minderung, Datensammlung" ("Sound emissions from machinery and installations; Measurement, reduction, data collection") at NALS in close collaboration with Working Committee "Garten- und Rasenpflegegeräte" ("Garden and lawn equipment") at NAEBM.
