Overview

The standard provides assistance to the users of standards regarding ergonomics of the physical environment. This also includes persons who design or evaluate physical environments. The standard demonstrates how the existing International Standards can also be applied for people with special requirements. These are those persons outside the scope of the standards regarding the physical environment. This standard has been prepared in accordance with the principles of ISO/IEC Guide 71 and on the basis of the data of ISO/TR 22411. It is not a database of characteristics of people with special requirements. It uses data from ISO/TR 22411 to ensure methods and criteria for achieving accessibility to environments by people with special requirements. This standard is not limited to a particular environment, but offers general principles for assessment and evaluation. The standard is applicable for structures, vehicles and outdoor environments. Certain environments may possibly require particular provisions, nevertheless the general principles designated here still apply. This standard also covers the following users: babies and infants, both genders, people with disabilities, the effects of aging, people with illnesses, and others. A special requirement of a person can appear in one particular concrete environment and not in others. The standard applies the principles of accessible design and permits a prediction of the consequences (for instance, in the form of the comfort of the environment). The standard has been prepared by Subcommittee ISO/TC 159/SC 5 "Ergonomics of the physical environment" (secretariat: BSI (United Kingdom)) of Technical Committee ISO/TC 159 "Ergonomics" (secretariat: DIN (Germany)) in cooperation with Technical Committee CEN/TC 122 "Ergonomics", the secretariat of which is held by DIN (Germany). The committee responsible for the standard on a national level is NA 023-00-05 GA "Gemeinschaftsarbeitsausschuss NAErg/NAM: Ergonomie der physikalischen Umgebung, ErgPhysU" ("Joint Working Committee NAErg/NAM: Ergonomics of the Physical Environment, ErgPhysU") at DIN.
