This standard is a test standard and specifies a method for the determination of the mass of 1 000 grains of cereals and pulses. It is applicable to all species of cereals and pulses with the exception of seed lots for sowing purposes. The standard deals in particular with quality aspects of cereals and pulses. The mass of 1 000 grains (TGM) or the weight of 1 000 grains (TGW) is an important characteristic for seed, in plant breeding and in agricultural crop production. It is necessary for calculation of seed to be sown. TGM is, on the one hand, a varietal characteristic, on the other hand it is subject to significant fluctuations due to the respective cultivation and weather conditions. The higher the TGM, the better the ratio between the grain mass and shell fraction; at a higher TGM the miller can yield a higher amount of flour. The Committee responsible for this standard is NA 057-05-06 AA "Getreide und Getreideerzeugnisse" ("Cereals and cereal products") at DIN.
