This part of DIN EN ISO 8503 specifies requirements for the optical microscope and describes the method for calibrating ISO surface profile comparators conforming to the requirements of ISO 8503-1. The standard is also applicable to the determination of the mean maximum peak-to-valley height (by microscopy) within the range of 20 µm to 200 µm of essentially planar blast-cleaned steel (components). The determination can be carried out on a representative section of the blast-cleaned substrate or, when this is not possible, on a replica of the surface. Where appropriate, this method can be used for assessing the roughness profile of other abrasive blast cleaned substrates. An alternative method is described in ISO 8503-4. The International Standard forming the basis of this standard has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 35 "Paints and varnishes" in collaboration with Technical Committee CEN/TC 139 "Paints and varnishes", the secretariat of which is held by DIN. The committee responsible for this standard is NA 002-00-10-04 UA "Oberflächenvorbereitung und -prüfung" ("Surface preparation and testing") at DIN.
This document replaces DIN EN ISO 8503-3:1995-08 .
