This part of the DIN VDE 0100 (VDE 0100) series of standards applies to earthing arrangements and protective conductors, including protective equipotential bonding conductors, with the aim of ensuring the safety of electrical installations. In addition, this document contains requirements for earthing and potential equalization for information and communication technology (ICT) installations with the aim of: - reducing the risk of electrical hazards to the correct functioning of these devices and the information technology cabling; - to provide telecommunications installations with a reliable signal reference level that can improve immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI); see ISO/IEC 30129. The application of this document is limited to the areas specified in DIN VDE 0100-100 (VDE 0100-100). This part also lists the restrictions on the scope of application. The DIN VDE 0100 (VDE 0100) series of standards does not apply, for example, to: - electrical railway installations, including vehicles and signaling technology; - electrical installations in aircraft; - installations in mining, open-cast mining, and quarries. The standard differs from DIN VDE 0100-540 (VDE 0100-540):2012-06 as follows: a) definition of a clear distinction between functional earthing and protective earthing (see introduction); b) inclusion of additional requirements for functional earthing and functional potential equalization for information technology and communication equipment (ICT). Examples of information technology and communication technology (ICT) systems are: - direct current supply networks (systems) for supplying power to information technology and communication technology (ICT) equipment within a building; - starred private automatic branch exchanges (PABX) or their equipment; - local (communication) networks (LANs); - fire and burglar alarm systems; - building automation systems, for example direct digital control systems; - systems for private automatic branch exchanges) or their equipment; - systems for computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) and other computer-aided services; - broadcasting and communication technology.
