Overview

This generic standard applies in connection with the relevant detail standard (VG 85741-3 and VG 85741-4) to steering gears for vessels. The generic standard specifies the general requirements and provisions. It contains details on technical requirements and test conditions that are invariable; that is, properties and provisions, that apply to the given surface vessels and/or submarines, as well as general implementation provisions, questions relating to obligation, patent rights, etcetera. Since steering gears are one of the most essential systems for the operation of vessels, their functional safety is of utmost importance. For this reason requirements, tests, type tests as well as quality assurance and quality controls (including tests after repair) were documented. The specified design principles also contain the regulations of ship safety (for example, SOLAS in connection with the Ordinance for the Safety of Seagoing Ships Schiffssicherheitsverordnung), occupational safety (for example, Pressurized Container Ordinance), accident prevention, the generally recognized codes of engineering practice (rules and guidelines for construction of the approved and certified classification rules) for which the steering gears are intended. This standard has been prepared by the DIN Shipbuilding and Marine Technology Standards Committee (NSMT), Technical Committee NA 132-02-01 AA "Leistungserzeugung, Vortrieb, Hilfsmaschinen" ("Power generation, Propulsion, Auxiliary engine").
