Overview

This document defines NEMP and lightning threat levels to be applied for equipment and systems to be developed or procured for, or to be furnished to the Bundeswehr. It contains the threat parameters for requirements for protection against the effects of a nuclear electromagnetic pulse from a nuclear weapon detonation at high altitudes (exoatmospheric NEMP) and for requirements for protection against the direct and indirect effects of lightning strikes. The lightning current parameters are specified in the standard for high and normal threat classes. The specified values cover approximately 99% (high threat class) and 95% (normal threat class) of all lightning strikes on the earth. The threat levels to be applied to a system or equipment shall be determined and specified by an analysis. The test methods for protection against NEMP and lightning are specified in the VG 96903 series of standards. Working Committee NA 140-00-19 AA "Nuklear-Elektromagnetischer Puls (NEMP) und Blitz" ("Nuclear electromagnetic pulse (NEMP) and lightning protection") at DIN Standards Committee Electrical Engineering (NE) is responsible for this document.
