• JIS Standards are systematic collections of Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS), which are published annually by the Japanese Standards Association (JSA). They serve as comprehensive reference works for experts from industry, technology and science.

JIS Standards play an important role in Japanese industry, as they help to ensure consistency and compatibility, and support international trade by harmonizing with other international standards such as ISO and IEC. Manufacturers offering JIS-compliant products often enjoy a competitive advantage, as they demonstrate the high quality and reliability of their products.

  • JIS Standards are primarily used in Japan by industrial and manufacturing companies to develop, manufacture and test their products. Public agencies and contracting authorities use them to define technical requirements for laws, regulations and tenders. Trading and export companies monitor JIS compliance to secure market access, while testing and certification bodies verify adherence to the standards. Universities and research institutions also use them in training and development to ensure uniform technical foundations.

  • JIS Standards are developed in Japan by the Japanese lndustrial Standards Committee (JISC). The JISC is based at the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and lndustry (METI) and coordinates the entire standardization process.

The actual development takes place in technical committees, comprising experts from various fields:

    • industrial companies [manufacturers, suppliers, industry associations]
    • research and educational institutions [universities, technical institutes]
    • government agencies [e.g. for occupational safety, construction, energy)
    • testing and certification organizations
    • consumer and user representatives (for safety or consumer-related standards)

The procedure is usually structured as follows: draft---> public commentary---> revision---> adoption by JISC---> Publication as official JIS Standard by METI.
