This Interpretation Sheet addresses the question of whether the requirements of 5.2.3 prohibit the use of a terminal box that is open to the interior of a motor with an operating voltage of 1 kV or greater, provided that the interior of the machine has a degree of protection of IP54 or more. The responsible committee is DKE/K 241 "Schlagwetter- und explosionsgeschützte elektrische Betriebsmittel" ("Electrical apparatus for potentially explosive atmospheres") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
