Overview

The purpose of this document is to specify requirements and test methods for determining the fire behavior of communication cables installed in buildings. The recommendations apply to copper cables and fiber optic cables in buildings that are used and installed in conventional ways. This Technical Report specifies how to assess the fire hazards posed by these installations. Established fire scenarios are described, as is the fire behavior of cables used to reduce these hazards. The relevant procedures are recommended in ISO/IEC 14763-2 "Installation and Planning Standard (Information technology - Implementation and operation of customer premises cabling - Part 2: Planning and installation)". There are no restrictions on the scope of application of this document. The recommendations given in this document also take into account laws and regulations relating to the fire behavior of cables. Furthermore, known test methods and their suitability for measuring the recommended fire behavior characteristics are evaluated. For reasons of electrical safety, power cables are generally installed separately from communication cables and in a different manner, so that this Technical Report does not apply to them.
