Short description
In many places, Germany’s wastewater infrastructure is in dire need of modernization. As climate conditions change, existing network structures and outdated measurement and control technology are increasingly reaching their limits. Prolonged dry spells promote sediment buildup in the network, while more frequent heavy rainfall events are increasingly leading to backflow and uncontrolled discharges, or the release of pollutants into the environment. The digitisation of wastewater systems forms the basis for intelligent sewer network control, which distributes water volumes throughout the system in a targeted manner during rainfall events and effectively reduces pollutant discharge into the environment. This VDI Recommendation supports planners and operators of wastewater systems in implementing digitization projects, taking into account the increasing weather extremes resulting from climate change and thus making an active contribution to climate adaptation
