This document specifies a 14-digit alphanumeric character string as a cross-manufacturer and cross-sector identification number for the purpose of unique identification and as a replacement for the previous ownership numbers. The cross-manufacturer identification number is applicable for all metering equipment and systems, as well as ancillary devices and control units. The identification of the devices is thus universal and unique. There are no restrictions on the scope of application of this document. Typical examples of application are electrical and non-electrical measuring devices and systems, as well as additional devices and control units.
