This document has been prepared by Working Committee NA 087-00-03 AA "Bremse" ("Brake") at DIN Standards Committee Railway (FSF). Safety valves in accordance with this document are normal stroke safety valves and solid stroke safety valves, hereinafter referred to as safety valves, which meet the applicable technical requirements for directly loaded safety valves for compressed air and nitrogen. This document specifies requirements for the design, function, installation, and connection dimensions, testing, and marking of safety valves for compressed air equipment on rail vehicles. This document is applicable to directly spring-loaded safety valves with normal and solid stroke characteristics. The purpose of the safety valve is to protect equipment permanently connected to the vehicle and subject to internal overpressure in compressed air systems and compressed air brake systems of rail vehicles and pressure vessels/pressure equipment subject to: - the Pressure Equipment Directive (Directive 2014/68/EU) or - the Simple Pressure Vessels Directive (Directive 2014/29/EU), specified in DIN EN 286-3 and DIN EN 286-4, from exceeding a certain maximum permissible pressure or operating conditions that are not permitted within the permissible tolerances. The standard differs from DIN 5589:2008-09 as follows: a) the standard has been editorially revised and adapted to the applicable design rules; b) normative references have been updated; c) specific requirements for the use of safety valves in rail vehicles have been added; d) requirements for type testing have been listed; e) requirements for in-service testing and periodic inspections have been added.
This document replaces DIN 5589:2008-09 .
