This International Standard specifies requirements for the safety of Microwave Therapy Equipment used in medical practice. The minimum safety requirements are considered to provide a practical degree of safety in the operation of microwave therapy equipment. A "Particular guidance and rationale" section gives some explanation about the most important requirements. A knowledge of the reasons for these requirements will facilitate the correct application of the standard and will expedite any revision as a result of changes in clinical practice or developments in technology. This International Standard specifies the basic safety requirements for microwave therapy devices used in medical practice. The standard differs from DIN EN 60601-2-6 (VDE 0750-2-6):2017-10 as follows: a) update of the reference to the general standard IEC 60601-1:2005, IEC 60601-1:2005/AMD1:2012, and IEC 60601-1:2005/AMD2:2020, Medical electrical equipment - Part 1: General requirements for basic safety and essential performance; b) normative references have been added; c) the clause "Electromagnetic disturbances - Requirements and tests" has been revised. The scope includes microwave devices that are used to gently heat tissue as a means to improve circulation.
