This part of the IEC 61340 series of International Standards "Electrostatics" defines the ESD protective packaging properties needed to protect ESD sensitive devices (ESDS) through all phases of production, rework/maintenance, transport and storage. Test methods are referenced to evaluate packaging and packaging materials for these product and material properties. Performance limits are provided. This standard does not address protection from electromagnetic interference (EMI), electromagnetic pulsing (EMP) or protection of electrically initiated explosive materials or devices. Packaging is necessary to protect electrostatic discharge sensitive devices (ESDS) from damage caused by static electricity and electrostatic discharge (ESD), as well as from physical and environmental damage during manufacturing, transport, and storage. Most standard packaging materials are electrically insulating, and insulating materials retain their charges. If the packaging is less insulating, the charge can be dissipated from the packaging into a material with a lower potential. Certain resistance ranges are useful for different purposes. Packaging can be classified according to these resistance ranges of the material used in its construction. This standard, or parts thereof, may not apply to all applications. Adaptation is achieved by evaluating the applicability of each requirement for the specific application.
