This standard attempts to define the basic requirements for the various application classes of PV modules, but it should not be assumed that all national or regional building codes are included. The specific requirements for applications on ships and vehicles are not covered. This standard does not apply to modules with integrated alternating current inverters (alternating current modules). The present standard is structured so that its test sequence can be coordinated with those from IEC 61215 or IEC 61646, so that a group of test specimens may be used to carry out both the safety and performance assessment of a PV module construction. The purpose of this document is to provide basic guidelines for the confirmation of the construction of PV modules submitted for type approval by testing according to EN 61730-2. These requirements are intended to minimize misuse and abuse of the modules or failure of internal components that could result in fire, electric shock or personal injury. The standard defines the basic safety requirements for the design and additional tests that arise depending on the end use of the modules. The component requirements are intended to provide proof of performance that these components are suitable for their applications in the design and environment of the modules. The responsible committee is DKE/K 373 "Photovoltaische Solarenergie-Systeme" ("Solar photovoltaic energy systems") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
