Overview

This part of the IEC 62282 series of standards primarily deals with so-called power-to-methane systems based on solid oxide cells (SOC) and a methanation reactor. Energy conversion systems of this type convert water and carbon dioxide (CO2) into methane and oxygen with the addition of electrical energy. This document covers two variants of the process control: - Variant 1: Water vapor and CO2 are converted into synthesis gas (mainly hydrogen (H2) and carbon monoxide (CO)) in the SOC using a co-electrolysis process and then fed into a methanation reactor. - Variant 2: Water vapor is converted into H2 in the SOC, which is then reacted with CO2 in a methanation reactor to form methane. In principle, the product gases can also be fed into other catalytic reactors in addition to a methanation reactor, for example to produce methanol, dimethyl ether, gasoline, or other chemicals. This document can therefore also be applied in a secondary sense to power-to-liquid or power-to-X systems in general. This document specifies procedures for testing performance. In addition to the measurement procedures themselves, this also includes the requirements for the measuring equipment and the design of the test report. The scope of this document does not include solid oxide cell/stack assemblies intended solely for the supply of electrical energy, as these are already described in IEC 62282-7-2. Similarly, test procedures for solid oxide cell/stack assemblies including reversible operation (without a methanation reactor) are not covered, as these are already described in IEC 62282-8-101. Furthermore, systems in which the methanation catalyst is integrated directly into the SOC are not covered. This document is intended to be used for data exchanges in commercial transactions between the system manufacturers and customers. Users of this document can selectively execute test items suitable for their purposes from those described in this document.
