The transmission capacity of existing overhead lines can be increased, for example, by using different cables, weather-dependent operation of the overhead line or conversion from alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). While use of the first two options has already been described in standards or application rules, the third option has not yet been addressed. The conversion of an existing circuit from AC to DC on an existing pylon that also carries other AC circuits (AC/DC overhead line) or the construction of a parallel DC overhead line requires additions or the revision of the previous design criteria DIN EN 50341 (VDE 0210). This pre-standard focuses on the electrical requirements (insulation coordination, clearances, earthing, etcetera) and the requirements for overhead line insulators and fittings for AC/DC or DC overhead lines. This prestandard applies for the planning and installation of high-voltage overhead electrical lines with hybrid AC/DC systems, one or more AC circuits are in parallel with one or more DC circuits in close vicinity. It also applies for the planning and installation of DC high-voltage overhead electrical lines. In this prestandard AC systems with a nominal voltage exceeding 45 kV and DC systems with a rated voltage exceeding 45 kV are regarded as high-voltage overhead electrical lines. The responsible committee is DKE/K 421 "Freileitungen" ("Overhead lines") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
