Several strategies may be used to implement rural electrification. The IEC 62257 series of standards applies where the grid is too remote (too expensive) or the individual demand centres are too small to make grid access economical, and where stand-alone power systems may be used to supply these connections. The IEC 62257 series of standards is intended to provide the various partners involved in rural electrification projects (such as project developers, project executors, installers, and so on) with the Technical Specifications for the construction of renewable energy power generation systems and hybrid systems with AC voltages up to 1 000 V, DC voltages up to 1 500 V. These specifications provide recommendations for: a) the selection of the correct system for the appropriate site; b) the design of the system; c) the operation and maintenance of the system. This Part 1 of IEC 62257 both introduces the methodology for realizing rural electrification using autonomous hybrid renewable energy systems and provides a guide to support the understanding and application of the IEC 62257 series of standards for the construction of distributed systems for rural electrification. The responsible committee is K 373 "Photovoltaische Solarenergie-Systeme" ("Solar photovoltaic energy systems") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
