This standard contains safety regulations relevant to bridge and gantry cranes when used as intended and under conditions foreseen by the manufacturer. The national interests during the preparation were represented by Steering Committee "CEN/TC 147 - ISO/TC 96 Cranes" of the Mechanical Engineering Standards Committee (NAM) at DIN. This standard defines relevant requirements set out in Annex I of the EC Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, relating to bridge and gantry cranes which were placed on the European Economic Area (EEA) market for the first time, with the intent of simplifying the means of proving conformity with such requirements. Once this standard is designated a harmonized standard in the Official Journal of the European Communities, a manufacturer applying this standard may assume compliance with the requirements of the Machinery Directive (the so-called presumption of conformity). This European Standard applies to bridge and gantry cranes mounted in a fixed position or free to travel by wheels on rails, runways or roadway surfaces. This European Standard is not applicable to non-fixed load lifting attachments, erection and dismantling operations, runways and other supporting structures nor does this standard cover additional loads due to the mounting of cranes on a floating or tilting base. This European Standard does not include requirements for the transport of persons. The specific hazards due to potentially explosive atmospheres, ionising radiation and operation in electromagnetic fields beyond the range of EN 61000-6-2 are not covered by this European Standard. This European Standard is applicable to bridge and gantry cranes manufactured after the date of its publication as an EN.
